Moragh Paxton

Moragh’s teaching, curriculum development and research has been in Commerce, Humanities, Science and Health Sciences. In her PhD she used linguistic and intertextual analysis of student writing as a tool for investigating the intersection of the academic curriculum and student voices in first year economics.
Moragh is currently working on three research projects:
Drawing on multilingual resources (mother tongue) to assist meaning making in economics builds on her doctoral research. In this project she has explored the multilingual resources that students draw on as they read, discuss and answer questions on conceptual issues in an economics text. She has worked in collaboration with Nolubabalo Tyam from the Multilingual Education Project to explore issues around code switching and identity.
She is also currently assisting Associate Professor Mbulungeni Madiba, Convenor of the Multilingual Education Project, with a pilot study which will assess the value of multilingual glossaries for learning economics and develop ways of integrating multilingual glossaries into curricula.
The Postgraduate Literacies Research Project, a cross-cutting project in CHED, is looking at the barriers to accessing and succeeding in postgraduate programmes. Her particular project is aimed at developing an in-depth understanding of genre features and criteria used in postgraduate assessment in two university departments.
The Integration of content, language and numeracy in a first year extended course in the General Education Programme in Science (GEPS) has been initiated in 2011.
